South Korean police are stepping up efforts to combat the string of crimes targeting Korean nationals in Cambodia, following the shocking death of a Korean college student who was allegedly tortured to death.

A Korean university student surnamed Park was found dead near Bokor Mountain in Cambodia’s Kampot Province in early August, in what authorities believe was a case of torture and murder.
Another Korean national who was held captive at the same site said Park had been “beaten so severely he couldn’t walk or breathe.”
His death certificate listed “extreme pain caused by torture” as the cause of death.

The case has sparked public outrage in South Korea, leading to growing calls for tighter protection for citizens overseas and stronger crackdowns on transnational crime groups.
In response, the Korean National Police Agency announced Sunday it will hold a bilateral meeting with Cambodian police in Seoul on October 23rd to establish a “Korean Desk,” allowing Korean officers to work directly with local law enforcement.
The system is expected to improve coordination in cases involving organized, multinational crime groups.
Police also plan to strengthen cooperation through a multinational task force within the year, targeting cross-border organized crime.
Additionally, President Lee Jae Myung has instructed the Foreign Ministry to make every effort to protect South Korean citizens in response to the recent string of crimes in Cambodia.

Meanwhile, new allegations have emerged about the suspects behind Park’s murder.
Yonhap News Agency reports that a Chinese national identified as Li, one of the main suspects, is also suspected of involvement in the 2023 Gangnam “drug-laced beverage” case that targeted students in Seoul.
A Korean civic group following the Cambodia case claimed Li had a prior drug record and served as a distributor in that earlier case.

The investigation is ongoing, with South Korean and Cambodian authorities working to track down the remaining suspect and broaden joint efforts against transnational criminal networks.

연합뉴스는 주요 용의자 중 한 명인 리 씨로 확인된 중국 국적자가 서울에서 학생들을 대상으로 한 2023년 강남 '마약 음료' 사건에도 연루된 혐의를 받고 있다고 보도했습니다.
캄보디아 사건 이후 한국 시민 단체는 리 씨가 이전에 마약을 복용한 적이 있으며, 이전 사건에서 유통업자로 활동했다고 주장했습니다.

조사가 진행 중이며, 한국과 캄보디아 당국은 남아 있는 용의자를 추적하고 초국가적 범죄 네트워크에 대한 공동 노력을 확대하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.
