When I’m in the Netherlands I’m never so inclined or inspired to look up at the sky. First of all because mostly it is grey and it rains, and because architecturally there aren’t many surprises.

내가 네덜란드에 있을 때 나는 결코 하늘을 올려다보고 싶은 마음이 들거나 영감을 받은 적이 없다. 첫째로, 대부분 회색이고 비가 오기 때문이고, 건축적으로 놀랄만한 것이 많지 않기 때문입니다.

But apart from the sky and the light, what I love so much about Rome is that it is full of visual surprises. The variety of color of the buildings, the many roof tops (there’s a whole world taking place on the rooftops :-), the many little sanctuaries scattered all over -

하지만 하늘과 빛을 제외하고, 제가 로마의 가장 좋아하는 점은 로마가 시각적 놀라움으로 가득 차 있다는 것입니다. 건물의 다양한 색깔, 지붕 꼭대기 많은 것, 곳곳에 흩어져 있는 많은 작은 은신처들 -

it feels good knowing that there’s always some saint, martyr or angel looking down or watching over you from somewhere above. All you have to do is direct your gaze upwards, and then you’ll see them everywhere.

언제나 어떤 성자, 순교자 또는 천사가 당신을 내려다보거나 어디선가 당신을 지켜보고 있다는 것을 알게 되어 기분이 좋다. 시선을 위로 향하기만 하면 어디에서나 볼 수 있습니다.

And at the same time there is the magic and splendor of bygone eras literally lying right underneath your feet. There is a city underneath the city. Not just the things that have already been dug up and are now museum pieces and archeological sites - but everything that is still buried. There is plenty to uncover still. On a regular basis new things are discovered.

동시에 마법과 찬란함도 있습니다. 지나간 시대의 아름다움은 말 그대로 여러분의 발 바로 밑에 놓여 있습니다. 도시 밑에 도시가 있다. 이미 파헤쳐져서 지금은 박물관의 조각과 고고학적인 장소일 뿐만 아니라, 여전히 묻혀 있는 모든 것. 아직 밝혀야 할 것이 많다. 정기적으로 새로운 것이 발견됩니다.

For example when they started digging the new metro line it took them forever because every few meters they struck some old artifacts, so all work had to be stopped, archeologists had to come in to dig everything up before they could proceed again.

예를 들어, 그들이 새로운 지하철 노선을 파기 시작했을 때, 그들은 몇 미터마다 오래된 유물들을 치기 때문에, 모든 작업을 중단해야 했기 때문에 고고학자들이 모든 것을 파헤쳐야만 다시 진행할 수 있었습니다.

So when in Rome I often feel quite literally between heaven and earth.

그래서 로마에 가면 문자 그대로 하늘과 땅 사이를 느끼곤 한다.

Whereas when in the Netherlands I feel I’m between grey sky and muddy ground 🤭🙀
반면에 네덜란드에서 나는 회색 하늘과 진흙탕 사이에 있는 것 같아 🤭🙀
